“e-thaksalawa” the National e-learning portal

The vision of the e-thaksalawa is “Empower the nation through e-learning”  

The mission is “Provide learning opportunities for creating a confident person for the universe”.

“e-thaksalawa” Learning Content Management System (LCMS) is produced and developed by the ICT Branch, Ministry of Education with a view of improving as a content repository in future to provide various services for virtual classrooms,storing, accessing, and managing contents.

The production and creation of the e-thaksalawa is completely done as an in house project entirely using the teachers who are working in the government schools in Sri Lanka e-thaksalawa is a continuous developing repository.

Main intention of introducing this Learning Content Management System is , to provide equity of education for the students even considering the multi ethnic community (Tamil, Sinhala & English), geographical boundaries and other existing issues pertaining to the delivery of formal education. Through this web site , it is expected to reach the students who are left behind due to various reasons and also for the students who require more information and resources on formal education, nationally and internationally.

e-thaksalawa is designed in such a way that all  the users have full range of required resources to follow the respective lessons in the curriculum. e-thaksalawa provides resources aligning to all the subjects from Grade 1 to Grade 13 considering the GCE (A/L) streams and also general knowledge with areas to be known as a student or a person in a community.

e-thaksalawa is a LCMS, designed to incorporate all the appropriate features in order to provide systematic, enjoyable and leisure learning experience. The contents of Primary grades are developed so as to be used interactively, as kids are very much like to play with the contents interactively (active learning) rather than engaging for passive learning.

e-thaksalawa, was awarded as the best e-content under e-learning and Education category of the “e-swabhimani” The National Best e-Content Award presentation in 2014 which was organized by the Information and Communication Technology Agency.

And e-thaksalawa was The winner of the e-Learning and Education category of the ”Manthan” South Asia and Asia Pacific e content award in year 2014 .

At present, the contents for all the subjects from Grade 1 to 5 (Primary section) have been completed in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Out of Grades 6-13 contents, the priority has been given to complete Grades 6 to 11 subjects.

Each grade provides the full range of subjects that offers for the local students based on the curriculum. Then each subject comprises the lessons aligned with the text book of respective subject. Under each subject the content is stored in the following sequence.

  1. Syllabus of the respective subject
  2. Teacher Instructional Manual of the respective subject
  3. Lessons of the subjects align with the order of the text book

Under each lesson of the respective subject, following contents have stored.

  • Respective note of the text book according to the lesson
  • Presentation or the lesson done by the e-thaksalawa team to explain the lesson for the users
  • Video lessons prepared for the particular unit of the subject
  • Additional readings/articles related to the lesson
  • Students’ notes (This is to be used for the students who doesn’t have a teacher for the respective subject in the school)
  • Question bank to practice the questions related to the lesson
  • Past papers from the schools/Zones/Province designed for the respective subject of the Grade
  • Model question papers
  • National Examination Papers
  • Online papers for G.C.E(A/.L) examination
  • From year 2017 it has already started the content development for G.C.E(A/L) subjects

In addition to that actions have taken to provide additional and supplementary reading and educational material for school community via  a e-library and also provided  curriculum related songs for students, edu-games, Sinhala thesaurus  , image bank, The map book ,general knowledge section and e-content for Pirivena students and the contents for students with special needs.

There are 16,000 registered users of e-thaksalawa and it is accessed by  more than 700,000 users daily.

Future plans of e-thaksalawa:-

  • e-thaksalawa will be the main content repository for “Smart Classroom initiative” with Information and Communication Technology Agency.
  • e-thaksalawa will be the platform for, Online collaboration and Communication, Effective Traditional and Modern Entertainment, Online counseling, Web based students and teachers evaluation system, Online Mind relaxation programs, Web based career guidance, Online Testing and Certification Mechanism, Web based training mechanism for teachers.

 

The vision of the e-thaksalawa is “Empower the nation through e-learning” and the mission is “Provide learning opportunities for creating a confident person for the universe”.

“e-thaksalawa” logo has already been registered and accepted as a registered Learning Content Management System under the Intellectual Property Department and approved the Trade Mark of e-thaksalawa from year 2015.

e-thaksalawa, was awarded as the best e-content under e-learning and Education category of the “e-swabhimani” The National Best e-Content Award presentation in 2014 which was organized by the Information and Communication Technology Agency.
