The Ministry of Education has made arrangements to implement a series of continuous programs for improving Mathematics learning in 500 schools selected on the basis of the achievement levels of Mathematics at G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination.
These programs are implemented with the objective of improving the achievement level of Mathematics among students from grade 01 to grade 11and to improve the teaching capacity of the Mathematics teachers of grades 1 – 5 and 6 – 11.
In addition to the capacity building of teaching and learning of Mathematics, for improving the achievement level of Mathematics of the students from 1 – 11, seven (7) main programs are conducted under this program. This includes three programs for primary section (1 – 5), three programs for grades 6 – 9 and one program for grades 10 – 11.
Accordingly, for the grades 1 – 5 and 6 – 9, the programs “Delisa”, use of text books “Mathematics Easily” and the program of activity based Mathematics teaching are introduced. For grades 10 and 11, remedial teaching process based on the essential Mathematics learning outcomes will be introduced under this program.
For these programs and the teaching and learning process at school level, school internal supervision mechanism and Quality Circles are used. In addition to that, external supervision at zonal and provincial levels will be done through direct observations and progress review meetings.
Nine (9) programs have also been planned by the Ministry of Education to sensitize the In-service Advisors, Subject Directors, Mathematics and Primary Directors in all provinces and zones about the relevant instruments and methodologies to direct this program properly. This program for the North Western Province was held recently (17.02.2020) at the Ministry of education.
