The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that it is expected to activate a special Dengue alleviation program island wide this weekend covering all the provinces with the assistance of school communities before starting the school term after the completion of G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination considering the risk of spreading Dengue due to the rainy weather condition prevailing these days. The initial program of this activity will be started in all schools in the Colombo education zone based on the Colombo city. The minister expressed these ideas while participating in a sensitizing program held at the Narahenpita District Secretariat. A gathering including all Principals of the schools in Colombo zone, Officers in Charge of the police stations and officers of the Colombo Municipal Council attended this occasion.
Further expressing the views, The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that the school vacation granted for holding the ordinary level exam which ends today, was not provided in previous years and since this vacation period of time is rainy season, there is a risk of spreading mosquitoes in school premises where rain water and garbage have been gathered. Therefore, actions will be taken to control this hazard with the support of all sections. Accordingly. this Dengue eradication exemplary cleaning program will be activated this weekend covering 144 schools in Colombo city. The minister further said that the cleaning programs that are already been implemented in schools will further be strengthened and encouraged and all the challenges will be overcome with the coordination of zonal offices, town councils, divisional secretariats, urban councils and the police. He pointed out at this occasion that the community residing around the schools also must work with responsibility for the hygiene of the school children without making the schools garbage dumping grounds.
