A significant step of making the national education policy a reality, the task of providing equal opportunities in education for all children in the country, was started today (17) at the ministry of education. Accordingly, a special meeting was held today morning at the ministry of education with the leadership of The Minister of Education G.L. Pieris to provide financial assistance for three children in Ginigathhena area to pursue their future education that was on the verge of collapse due to economic difficulties.
When the discussion was held with the three children, Nihara Sewwandi studying in grade 6 of Ginigathhena Central College, Jayani Kavshalya learning in grade 1 of Ginigathhena Primary School and Sandaruwan Kumara learning in grade 2 of the same school, their mother Mrs. Nirosha Priyangani and the principals of those schools, it was decided to provide a monthly education expenses for those children.
Marking this event symbolical, a financial offer worth of Rs. 10,000/= was made to each child today and the minister stated that full assistance will be provided from the ministry of education in the future for continuation of the studies of those three children. Mr. M.B.B. Silva has provided his personal financial contribution to the minister for making this offer to the children.
The minister has taken this step drawing his attention to a sensitive news item published in media revealing the pathetic situation of this family due to the blindness of the mother and the continuous economic hardships which caused to stop the educational activities of these three children.
A group of people including The Minister of Wild Life and Forest Conservation C.B. Ratnayaka, the Secretary of Education Professor Kapila C.K. Perera, Provincial Director of the Central Province Mr. Thilak Ratnayaka, the principal of the school Mr. Upul Indrajith and the deputy principal Ms. Gayani Wickramasingha had joined in this occasion.
