The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that the steps will be taken after the coming new year to distribute vouchers among girl students in schools who are facing the challenge of obtaining adequate sanitary facilities and with the intention of improving sanitary habits of girl children in schools.
The minister further stated that the measures will be taken to distribute sanitary towels among nearly eight hundred thousand girl children in identified schools with poverty and the schools in difficult, very difficult and isolated areas and the relevant cabinet paper for this purpose has already been submitted for approval.
The government expects to spend an allocation of about one billion rupees for this purpose and the value of one voucher is about 1200 rupees. The objective of this program is to support the school children from the families with economic difficulties while empowering them with healthy and hygienic habits the minister further emphasized.
