The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha
The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that it is expected to prepare children who come out of the school system to be able to conform with new economic trends through new educational transformative change.
The minister said this while participating in the award ceremony of ‘National Champions of Information Technology – 2023’ held at the Ministry of Education.
This National Champions of Information Technology tournament is organized annually by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Sri Lanka Computer Society, Sri Lanka Information Technology Industrial Board and the computer studies section of the University of Colombo.
Not only providing information and communication technology, it is expected to provide broader opportunities for children to engage in the fields of industrial development and to encourage the children for this purpose, the action will be taken to send the instructions to all heads of schools through a circular emphasizing them to prepare children for tournaments like Olympiad from school level to international level, the minister further said.
The minister further said that the Ministry of Education will provide opportunities to study Artificial Intelligence as a subject together with the Information Technology from Grade eight upwards and the pilot program of this is started on 19th of March (today) in 20 selected schools representing all provinces in the country with the sponsorship of Microsoft institution and also actions have been taken to train 100 Information Technology teachers for this purpose.
National Champions of Information Technology tournament was implemented for all students and teachers involved in the subject of Information Technology and it was consisted of the sections, Young Computer Scientist, the national level school software competition and the creative teacher. The evaluation activities of this tournament were done by the computer studies section of Colombo University. This program was organized with the contribution of the Federation of Information Technology Industry of Sri Lanka and Computer Society of Sri Lanka.
A number of officers including the Secretary of Education Ms. Wasantha Perera participated in this occasion.
