Earlier it had been proposed to hold the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2023 in the month of October. But the assessment of answer scripts of G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2022 was delayed for about three months due to the trade union activities and the results were released on 04.09.2023.
However, the applications were called for G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2023 by the date of 31.07.2023 and the applications from 324,410 candidates had been received. Again 18,473 applications have been received by the date of 18.09.2023 and altogether 342,883 candidates have applied at the moment and it is an increase of 10,837 candidates more than the number of candidates sat for the exam in 2022 (332,406). By reason of the delaying of releasing the results of G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2022, holding of G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2023 was scheduled, as proposed, to be started from 27th of November 2023 and to be ended on 21st of December.
However, a large number of students demanded to postpone the proposed exam dates and a large number of members of parliament in government and opposition also raised the same demand in parliament in the past few days.
Accordingly, in the event of considering the postponement of proposed exam timetable, attention must be drawn towards several matters.
As a consequence of covid 19 the percentage of dates of conducting school activities was between 50% and 60% and therefore, holding of G.C.E. Ordinary Level, G.C.E. Advanced Level and grade 5 scholarship examinations were delayed and the assessment of answer scripts and releasing of results have also been postponed.
Furthermore, owing to various trade union activities, economic setback and the struggles
happened in 2022 obstructions happened to the school education. Holding of examinations were also delayed. Who suffered from all these happenings were the school children and their parents.
Because of the aforesaid various reasons, postponement of examinations and delay in issuing results happened in the recent past and as a consequence of it, university admissions, enrolment in the courses of higher education institutions and admission to foreign universities were also held up during the last few years. As a result of this, the opportunities for applying for the courses have also been delayed.
The expectation of the ministry was to stop this slowing down and provide the opportunities for higher education after sitting for the exams within the normal age limits.
Detrimental consequences happening as a result of postponing the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination – 2023 until January 2024.
