The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha says that the exam time table will be updated next year by holding the two exams G.C.E. O/L and A/L within the same year and normalizing the educational activities and the steps will be taken to settle the teacher shortage in national and provincial schools by offering new appointments to 7800 Colleges of Education teachers on 15th of June. The Minister further said that the steps will be taken in the near future after obtaining the approval to appoint the selected graduates passed out of the universities below the age of 35 to fill the vacancies mainly for the subjects Science, Technology and Language at the national and provincial levels.
The minister stated this while participating in a program held today at the Ministry of Education in which the scholarships were awarded to the students who passed the G.C.E. O/L examination with high grades but coming from low income families with economic difficulties and for them to pursue with their advanced level educational activities. This function was held under the leadership of the Minister of Education and the with the participation of Indian High Commissioner Mr. Gopal Bagle.
This scholarship program is conducted under the patronage of the Indian Government in collaboration with the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Education since 2006. This scholarship has been named after Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi who is considered as the Father of Non-violence by the Indian people.
