The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that it will be difficult to find an employment beyond a laborer’s job without a basic knowledge of Information Technology within next five years and as a preparation for that situation information Technology will be added as a core subject of ordinary level examination from next year. In line with that Artificial Intelligence will be introduced to the students as subject from grade 8. Although there was an arrangement to introduce that subject to grade 10 earlier, it was decided to teach Artificial Intelligence from grade 8 upon the suggestions of a committee of scholars including university professors. The minister expressed these ideas while attending a function held at the Ministry of Education.
Further expressing his views, the minister mentioned that it is impossible to create a human being suitable for the 21st century only with additional tuition classes without such transitional change. Still we are continuing with the outdated examination centered education system with only minor reforms. Therefore, we have to change this system and stand up with the change that young generation is demanding now. We are ready to do that revolutionary social change through educational transitional process, the minister said.
