A special program to bar the unhealthy customs coming into schools
The Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha says that the teaching of the subject of Artificial Intelligence to Grade 10 students will be started in the coming year going several steps further in a background where we have to go rapidly towards an educational transformation moving beyond a mere education reforms according to latest UNESCO reports. All the teachers have to be trained in technology and the entire university system starting from schools must be involved in a broad transformation, he said.
The Minister also pointed out that we have faced with a challenge to safeguard the young people specially including the children in the urban and semi-urban areas from various social activities at present. Accordingly, a workshop with the participation of the teachers from hundred and forty four schools in Colombo was started for the purpose of avoiding the unsuitable practices and customs including the unhealthy foods coming into schools and those teachers will be engaged in counselling and also the support of trained counsellors in Divisional Secretariats will also be obtained for this purpose, the minister said.
The minister mentioned these ideas at a function held in Colombo Zone in order to distribute cooking utensils to prepare mid-day meals in selected schools with nutritional needs. The Association of Aluminum Industries in Kaduwela donated these items on a request of the minister. This pilot program is scheduled to be implemented island wide in the future.
