The Minister of Education Professor G.L. Peiris stated that the schools in the Western Province will be opened on the 15th of March only for Grade 05, Grade 11 and Grade 13 and for all other grades the schools will be opened on the 19th of April after the April vacation. The minister said this when he participated in a media discussion on 09.03.2021 at the ministry of education.
Further expressing his ideas at this occasion the minister said,
We have received the recommendation in writing from the Director General of Health. According to the instructions received, the schools in the Western Province must be opened on the 15th of March only for the grades 5, 11 and 13. The Classes for other grades will be opened after the April vacation. Therefore, the schools will be opened for other grades on 19th of April.
The students have already been admitted to the schools for grade one classes. But those classes have not started. The actions will be taken to open all other classes including grade one classes in the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts in the Western Province on the 19th of April. There is no issue regarding the opening of schools in other areas in the island. Accordingly, all schools in the island except in the Western Province will be opened for all grades on the 15th of March, he also said.
