The Minister of Education G.L. Pieris states that HE the President requested from the people in the country that his government will take the responsibility of developing the country and to perform their duty for that purpose and since the people have performed their duty perfectly, their expectations must be fulfilled now.
The minister expressed these ideas when he assumed the duties of his portfolio as the cabinet minister for education in the new government at the premises of the Ministry of Education today (13)
In this special occasion that was held giving the priority to the religious observances, the former Minister of Education Dallas Alahapperuma, the Secretary of Education Mr. N.H.M. Chithrananda, State Secretary Ranjith Chandrasekara, Additional Secretaries and several senior officers had participated.
At this occasion the minister pointed out that our education system is still measuring the knowledge of the children learnt by heart instead of their analytical skills, there is a vast gap between the acquire knowledge and its practical use. Therefore, this system must be changed going beyond the traditional framework to achieve this task.
The minister also expressed his gratitude to the former Minister of Education Dallas Alahapperuma for the measures already taken by him to formulate a strong foundation and an initiative about the strategies for future education in this country.
The society will have to face many atrocious consequences if the education does not provide at least a minimum value to the life of a person. Especially, there is a duty to introduce alternative measures for the social mobility of the majority of children who are deprived of the higher education opportunities due to the external circumstances such as the lack of adequate infrastructure facilities, the minister pointed out and also said that he expects to implement more practical and timely decisions step by step within the education system in the country according to a systematic plan. The minister further stated that the profession of teaching is not new to him and he has experience of their strength, creativity and dedication for more than 26 years. He started his career as a university lecturer and became a vice chancellor and then entered the politics. He also said that he expects the innovative contribution, support and dedication of all in this field for the development of education in this country.
