Our aim through “Wishwoda” is to create children who overcome the barriers and succeed the world – Hon. Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam

Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe says that the education system of this country must be modernized to be able to face the challenges in the twenty first century and for that purpose it is necessary to give priority to the field of Science and Technology. The Prime Minister expressed these ideas yesterday (13) while attending as the chief guest to the function held for handing over the “Wishwoda College” to the ownership of the students at Maguruoya Wtta, Kurunegala.

Further expressing his views The Prime Minister said that the ability and strength to take the name of a school up to excellence depends on the principals and teachers who can dedicate their service for the development of it at the initial stages. The same responsibility lies on the principal and the teachers of “Wishwoda” school from now on. It is a special achievement to be able to finish the construction of this school and hand it over to the ownership of children within  such a short period of 15 months’ time and the actions will be taken to provide another school of this type to Kurunegala district in the future, the Prime Minister further stated. While participating in the inauguration of “Wishwoda” school, The Minister of Education said that his aim is to develop the school system of this country in order to create children who overcome the barriers and succeed the world and this “Wishwoda” school is one such special occasion for succeeding that wish.

Further stating his ideas at this occasion, The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that this school was build under the project funds of the nearest school is the best school program and the reason for not admitting children to the grade one of this school is the availability of many primary schools in the surrounding area. And also there wasn’t any political interference when the children were admitted to this school, the minister said.

The minister further stated that at the time of his taking up the portfolio of the minister of education the percentage of the schools with electricity facility was only 60% but now it has been possible to increase it up to 99%. And also the steps were taken to identify the schools without drinking water, toilet facilities and desks and chairs separately and the measures were taken to fulfill those requirements. Nearly 9000 schools from among the all schools in the system were given a developmental facility whatsoever with national level interference during the recent times. The decision has been taken to construct several schools of this type in Gampaha and Colombo districts in the future, the minister stated at this occasion.

The Kurunegala district has also come to the level of most densely populated districts in Sri Lanka and comparatively the student population has also gone up. Since the existing schools in the district are unable to fulfill the demand, the steps were taken to construct this school in this area. “Wishwoda” national school is the 355th national school which is added to the present number of national schools.

As a practical solution to the problem that has been prevailing throughout the country for a long time that only a small number of children admitting to well-equipped urban schools, the program of the nearest school is the best school is being implemented as a brainchild of The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. This school which has been built on a 5 acre land at Maguruoya Watta, Kurunegala was built under this program and rupees 1000 million has been spent for this purpose. This school functions as a mixed school and it has been planned to conduct classes from 06 to 13 here.
