The Minister of Education summons the officers of Archeology urgently to Colombo

puraThe Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam took steps yesterday to call for to Colombo all executive officers of the Department of Archeology who are working throughout the island in order to discuss several main issues arisen in the field of Archeology. The attention was drawn to several issues including the problems pertaining to the Archeological sites, issues reported in the print and electronic media, the practical problems faced by the officers while in the field and the restructuring of the Department of Archeology at this discussion that was held at the auditorium of the second stage of Sethsiripaya.

The minister had a lengthy discussion about the information reported in the media regarding the Archeological sites and inquired from the officers about the measures taken by them.

In addition to this, the minister instructed the officers to take necessary steps to introduce a four digits telephone hot number facilitating the people to provide information about the destruction caused to the Archeological monuments and the issues emerging in the field of Archeology.

The issues surfaced due to the inaction of Archeological Gift Fund which was established to encourage the people who contributed to conserve the Archeological monuments were also discussed at this occasion. The minister instructed to re-establish the Archeological Gift Fund in order to offer gifts and appreciate the contribution made by the general public, the department of police and the officers of Archeology for interfering to conserve the Archeological monuments.

Furthermore, several matters pertaining to the practical problems faced by the officers of Archeology when performing their duties were also discussed at this occasion. The attention was drawn to the issues such as transportation problem and safety problem etc. and the minister told the officers to inform him even personally about any problem they have. The protection of Archeological heritage is a national responsibility and it is the duty of all to dedicate in utmost level for that purpose, the minister emphasized at this occasion.
