The admission to university medical faculties has been increased by 350 for the first time in the history

It was decided to increase the admission to state university medical faculties by 350 at a discussion held recently (04) headed by the Education Minister G.L. Pieris.

This decision was taken according to HE the President’s National Policy Framework, ‘Vision for Prosperity’ which says the aim of preparing a program to give opportunities for obtaining a degree or reaching degree level to all who qualify for university admissions and also to increase the number of students currently admitted to the universities. As a major step of the expected future education development process and achieving those targets, this decision has been taken by the ministry of education.  

This decision has taken according to a request made by the minister of education from the University Grant Commission (UGC) to take necessary steps to increase the number of students being enrolled in universities considerably more than the previous years and also after several rounds of talks with the UGC, Vice-Chancellors, Deans of the medical faculties of state universities. This is the first time enrolling such a high number of students to the medical faculties of state universities. 

Accordingly, the aim of this decision is to give more enrolment opportunities than the previous years to the students when they are admitted to medical faculties of the universities based on the results of G.C.E. Advanced Level examination held in 2019 and also to increase the number of future doctors added to the human resource of the country.     

Education Ministry Secretary Professor Kapila Perera, UGC Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga, Vice-Chairman Janitha N. Liyanage, UGC officials, Vice-Chancellors and Deans of the medical faculties attended the meeting.
