The Minister of Education Dallas Alahapperuma mentions that only 46 days have passed after he was appointed as the Minister of Education and within this short period of time he was able to identify a number of issues in the field of education unsolved for more than a decade. His intention is to find permanent solutions for those issues with the cooperation of all relevant sections in the future.
There was a special meeting yesterday (07) at the ‘Isurupaya’, the ministry of Education between The Minister of Education Dallas Alahapperuma and the principals of 374 national schools island wide and the minister expressed these ideas at this meeting. Even though the ministry of education has the direct responsibility for the national schools in this country, this kind of meeting between the minister of education and relevant principals is held after one and half years time.
At this meeting a long discussion was held between the minister and the national school principals about the policy decisions intended to be implemented in the future in several fields including maintaining the quality of national schools, strengthening the teaching learning process, providing sufficient number of trained teachers for that purpose, expanding the classroom facilities, development of school premises, improving the physical and infrastructure facilities and implementing leadership programs targeting the capacity building of teachers and principals.
The minister further discussed at this occasion the way of directing the school community towards the development of the country and how to contribute to it at the national level. The education of the country can be improved qualitatively by all involved parties in it through the recognition of their respective obligations properly and performing accordingly, the minister emphasized.
The minister explained that the process of enrolling students in the schools has been complicated because the relevant responsibility and the authority has not been properly delegated to the principal and the minister believes that the issues in this regard can be minimized by decentralizing the power.
A lecture to sensitize the national school principals on how to protect the school children from harmful drugs was delivered by the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Western Province Deshamanya Mr. T.M.W. Thennakoon at this occation.
