Through the Suraksha Student Insurance Coverage program provided by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education for school students, the agreement signed with Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited on 2024.07.01 has been updated with amendments, and the new agreement was signed under the patronage of Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewa, Secretary to the Ministry of Education, at the Ministry premises yesterday (09th).
Accordingly, through this updated agreement, the benefits granted to school students have been increased, and the new revised benefits are as follows:
Health Insurance Coverage
- Inpatient treatment benefits – Rs. 300,000/- (in government/private hospitals)
- Outpatient treatment benefits – Rs. 20,000/-
- Critical illness benefits – from Rs. 1,500,000/-
Accident Insurance Coverage
- For total permanent disability – Rs. 200,000/-
- For permanent partial disability – Rs. 150,000/-
- For temporary disability – from Rs. 25,000/- up to Rs. 100,000/-
Life Insurance Coverage
In addition to students belonging to low-income families earning an annual income of less than Rs. 180,000/-, students whose parents/legal guardians belong to families under the Aswesuma welfare program will receive Rs. 75,000/- per student in the event of the death of a parent or legal guardian. The maximum amount allocated per death is Rs. 225,000/-, which is divided equally among all school-going children in the family. This insurance benefit is available separately for the death of both parents or the legal guardian.
When the program is implemented for the 2025/2026 year, new amendments will be included in addition to the previous benefits. As the agreement was amended on 2025.10.09, the new benefits will be applicable only for incidents occurring on or after 2025.09.01.
The implemented amendments are as follows:
I. During the 2024/2025 year, the benefit for parental death was applicable to families with an annual income of Rs. 180,000/- or less. However, from 2025.09.01 onwards, this threshold is revised to Rs. 240,000/- or less.
II. Previously, students receiving long-term medication for various diseases were not covered under this program. Therefore, from 2025.09.01 onwards, students receiving long-term medication for diseases classified as critical illnesses and the diseases listed below are eligible to receive outpatient benefits up to Rs. 20,000/-:
- Epilepsy
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn’s disease
- Rheumatic valvular heart disease
III. Provision to obtain benefits up to Rs. 75,000/- for Scoliosis Brace devices used for correcting spinal deformities.
IV. Provision to obtain benefits up to Rs. 75,000/- for hearing aid equipment (recommended by an ENT or relevant specialist surgeon).
V. Provision to obtain benefits for “Lumber Guards and Cervical Collars” not only in cases of accidents but also in non-accidental medical conditions, when recommended by a specialist doctor.
When claiming benefits, the ownership certificate and all other relevant documents must be certified by the Principal of the school and submitted to the nearest branch of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited.
