One Million Rupee Award for the Sri Lankan Teacher of the Year

The wonder of teachers is that they take on learners from every walk of life and face every challenge imaginable. Every child, from whatever his or her starting point, is viewed as an individual with high potential and is nurtured to achieve the highest goal he or she is capable of. Teachers are expected to be the ‘Life Changers’ as society entrusts them to guide its children to fulfil their full potential and achieve what they aspire to.

The award

In honour of all dedicated and committed teachers, Aravinda De Silva, Sri Lanka’s elite cricketer and the match winner of the 1996 world cup final has come forward to contribute One Million Rupees to initiate an annual teacher award which will be open to all teachers of Sri Lanka. Aravinda, recalling the influence Mr. R.I.T.Alles had on his success, mentions that teachers of the calibre of Mr. Alles should be considered as nation builders. Aravinda’s late Father, Sam De Silva too was a teacher before he joined the corporate sector. His wife, Mrs. Anushka De Silva, volunteers herself to teach children with special needs. Aravinda believes that their blessings have contributed in numerous ways to make him what he is today.

In highly developed countries, the best minds become teachers and the profession is held in high esteem. If Sri Lanka is to be competitive in this global landscape, we will need to attract a larger number of talented young people to this noble profession. ‘The Sri Lankan Teacher of the Year’ award and the ‘International Forum for Teachers’ are all aimed towards elevating the status of the teacher and appreciate the yeoman service that they carry out in nation building.
