The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that the objective of the Ministry of Education is to make the children of the nation to be passionate with reading. The minister expressed this idea while participating in the inaugural function of the Sustainable Reading Promotional Program ‘Kalana Mithuru Poth Sumithuru’ 2018 – 2019 which was held today (6) at the premises of the ministry of education according to a concept of his own. The minister points out that the habituation of reading to a young society which is in the risk of becoming addicted to various bad habits and unholy activities is really a revolutionary concept.

At this occasion the minister pointed out that habituating the children for reading is a creation of a future generation empowered with knowledge and intelligence for the country. Through this action it is possible to build a strong foundation for the development of the country and it is also a massive support for improving the human resource of the country, said The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam at this function.

The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam pointed out that the Ministry of Education as well as the present government has clearly understood the value of reading and the urgent need for developing the taste of reading among the children. The minister further explained that the children must be encouraged to improve their diverse knowledge through reading of different books expanding their vision to a wider perspective without being limited to certain boundaries.

The expectation of the state is also to regularize the libraries of all government schools and to improve further the human resources of them, mentioned The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. The minister further remarked that it is possible to create a massive revolution of knowledge within the country through the persuasion and appreciation of the children who read and the expenditure incurred for this purpose is not another cost for the country but it should be considered as a valuable investment for the country.

This Sustainable Reading Promotional Program ‘Kalana Mithuru Poth Sumithuru’ is implemented for the students who are learning in the grades from 06 to 13 in the schools of the country. This program is consisted of two sections namely the medal program and the performing section.

Under the medal program the students who obtain more than 50% marks for the work sheets written on the each book read by them and complete 50 work sheets (student who have read 50 books) will receive silver medal. The students who obtain more than 50% marks for the work sheets written on the each book read by them and complete 75 work sheets (student who have read 75 books) will receive gold medal and the students who obtain more than 50% marks for the work sheets written on the each book read by them and complete 100 work sheets (student who have read 100 books) will receive platinum medal.

The performing program will be held at school, zonal, provincial and national levels. Under the first stage of this program the students have to select on their own a suitable book from the school library or from among the books approved by the Ministry of Education for the use in the schools, complete the relevant work sheet file and hand it over to the class teacher. At the second stage 20 best readers will be selected for the zonal level from among the school level readers sent by the schools. The third step of this program is to select the 10 best readers for the provincial level from the 20 best readers sent from the zones. At the fourth stage a national level quiz reality TV program will be held among the best readers of the provincial level. It is also scheduled to award foreign scholarships to 100 best readers selected annually.

The presentation of the circular and the instruction manual related to the Sustainable Reading Promotional Program ‘Kalana Mithuru Poth Sumithuru’ 2018 – 2019 and the display of silver, gold and platinum medals that will be awarded to the winning students occurred today under the patronage of The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. The State Minister of Education V. Radhakrishnan, the Secretary of Education Mr. Sunil Hettiarachchi, Additional Secretary Ashoka Senani Hewage, the Director of the school library development section of the Ministry of Education Mr. R.H.N. Nandasiri and The Chairman of the National Library and Documentary Services Board Mr. Deepal Chandraratna had joined in this occasion.
