Special discussion on the service issues of the principals

secA special discussion headed by the Secretary of Education was held yesterday (28) at the ministry of education with the representatives of trade unions of principals about the issues emerged in the principals’ service.

At this occasion they submitted several demands including the backdating and offering one and same date for all the appointments given in different instances in the years 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 on the results of principals’ service examination held in 2006 according to the previous service minute, Releasing from the necessity of qualifying language proficiency in English the link language within 3 years from the date of appointment to the principal service mentioned under the clause 9 of Sri Lanka Principals’ Service Minute and releasing from the language requirements that should be fulfilled according to the public administration circular number 1/2014.

The Secretary of Education informed them that the recommendations should be taken from the Public Service Commission for these demands and requests for this purpose have already been made to the Public Service Commission and waiting their response.

In addition to this, the discussion was also directed to the matter of not awarding the principal posts by some provincial authorities to the officers appointed to the Sri Lanka Principals’ Service upon the results of the competitive examination for recruiting the principals held in 2015. Even though the minister of education has provided necessary measures for this purpose through a cabinet paper the provincial councils have not given the proper places for these officers.

Following a request made for preparing an accepted method for offering foreign scholarships to the principals, the Secretary of Education informed the delegation that it will be done in the future.

Several officers including the Additional Secretaries of the ministry of education participated in this discussion.
