A special program from The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam to socialize the garbage management as a living habit of school community

garbageThe Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has decided to launch a special program at school level for finding a solution to the problem of garbage which has become a severe issue at the moment. The objective of this new program is to sensitize and practically engage the school community for waste management while socializing the necessary guidance for finding sustainable solutions for garbage problem through the schoolchildren.
Since the school community is consisted of forty five hundred thousand school children and two hundred and thirty thousand teachers, it is possible to convey the message of waste management to the entire community including the parents through the school children.

The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that under this circumstance it will be a most practical program to engage school and the school community for socializing the message of waste management.
The minister further instructed the officers to prepare a special arrangement for sensitizing the school teachers on this matter and to direct them to implement waste management program practically within the school premises with the help of children. In addition to this, The Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam instructed the officers to prepare a plan to take the message of the knowledge about domestic waste management to the parents and adults through school children.
The minister has also instructed the officers to take action for providing all schools in the island with dustbins and containers for compost relevant to the waste management. Parallel to this program, the minister has given instructions to draw attention for encouraging the children to start home gardening at school level and providing them with necessary knowledge about using waste matter as manure.
Further expressing his ideas on this, the minister stated that providing active contribution by all citizens of the country including the school community is a timely necessity for the success of this program. The minister further instructed the officers to launch a monitoring process to continue this program actively without paving way for including this program also to the set of unsuccessful programs implemented from time to time for waste management.
